This page relates ‘Concluding Remarks’ of the study on the Impact of Vedic Culture on Society as Reflected in Select Sanskrit Inscriptions found in Northern India (4th Century CE to 12th Century CE). These pages discuss the ancient Indian tradition of Dana (making gifts, donation). They further study the migration, rituals and religious activities of Brahmanas and reveal how kings of northern India granted lands for the purpose of austerities and Vedic education.

Concluding Remarks

The inscriptions, the land grants in particular, issued during early and early medieval periods in northern India and studied in this thesis reveal some special features as they throw light on several problems associated with land management, such as donor and donee of the land, the procedures for land donation, varieties of assignments, the purpose of the grants, tenure, ownership, privileges, security and protection of the grant, economic development and others. The descriptive or eulogy part of those charters records historical information about the donors such as their religious faith, genealogy, and others. It sometimes carries lucid indications to the spread of vedic culture in different regions of the country at different times covertly influencing society in many ways during early and early medieval periods.

This final chapter of the research undertaken attempts to recapitulate some regular as well as striking occurrences. The chapter gives an overall summary of the work with brief comments on relevant points and the findings of the research. It also contains the prospects of future research that highlights two modern methods viz. ‘The Radiocarbon Dating’ or ‘Carbon Dating’ and ‘The Thermo-luminescence Dating’ method which could be useful to date the historical artifacts, inscriptions, cultural architecture or idols or even to cross-check the established views to make our statements stronger scientifically.
