The Sleep

T. Shyama Krishna

Oh sleep, soothing slumber,
Cruel are thy ways!

Thou visitest not those who pine for thee,
And eludest those who whine for thee,
We the humble ones are hard of understanding thee!

Lo, the lover here is taking turns in bed,
Struck by the arrows of cupid,
And someone is weeping his eyes out,
For some dear one lost,
And where are thou mischievous self to be found?

There, where the man is grappling with destiny, and with thee,
Where the student is struggling through the night with his studies
Trying to wipe thee from his eyes!

It is said,
Prince Laxman could keep you at bay,
By shifting you to his other half Urmila
So to bless her night and day!

But we the lesser mortals are incapable hence,
Bless us with the boon,
our own will to swoon!
