Lover’s Lament
(ANNONYMOUS)
Keep me there, if no nearer,
Fling me not away;
For I am thine; you are dearer
Than the luscious look of May.
Keep me there in storm or shine;
Cast me not overboard;
I have no claim, except I am thine,
True in deed and word.
Keep me there, in praise or blame,
Midst trouble or prosperity,
Whether high in fame I ride to thee,
Or sink in sin and sham,
Keep me there, near thee,
My heart knows no falsity.
Let years roll on, the winds sweep by,
The billows rage and storm,
Let landscapes perish, landmarks fly,
But ever shall thy form,
Remain the beacon of my life,
Whether you be mine or another’s wife.
