K. HEMA SUNDARARAJU
The Night like a watchful thief
Entering the house when the master is out
Comes with all its brooding darkness
To reign this earth; full of houses trillions worth.
Seeing it the million Suns flee, stay and stare
As children do when they near a bear!
Now our fair lunatic comes, peeps and laughs at the world.
(But alas! Once in a month with all his face)
Caring less than two-pence for his change.
With whatever terms we scold the night
It has its burglar-Bhaktas
And fond, gay lovers-offering breaking coconuts.
Also for it the defeated king and fatigued labourer long
To console their minds and bodies with a sleep too strong.
