Brahman of the Upanishads

Dr. K. V. Rao

Inscrutable Lord sitting in the heart
Focuses the mind on outside matter
Who but a sage, ceasing to be mortal
Looks within, to find his own soul?

Not ego of speciality is the spirit of man
But conscious entity and the driving force
Atman is Brahman, the godhead, not any deity
Far off or its symbol worshipped by laity.

Truth, Consciousness and Joy Infinite
Transcendent Seer pervading all space
Immanent Radiance in the heart hidden
Spirit Supreme, the word OM, is Brahman.

Not by learning of scriptures sacred
Nor through intellect is Atman reached
Initiated by a teacher himself liberated
Gets onlyknown when by Yoga practised.

Eternal is the soul, dies not with the body
Immortal it becomes, after freed from desires
With senses controlled, mind and reason still
Concentrated on Brahman liberated by vision.

Whoever sees God in all His creation
Unselfishly works for the good of all
With peace and contentment at heart
Rests his mind on Him onlyrealizes.
