HARI HARA DAS
(Translated from the Oriya by BRAJAKISHORE DAS)

I count and count again
The coins I’ve collected in a day,
Steeped in the bustle of greed
Is this mind of a grocer that keeps counting
Time’s every single moment.

I see reflected today
The thousand fragments of my being
In every atom of the broken mirror.
And I go on counting
The parades of bodies
On their way home from life's vanity fair.

Bleeding beneath the shield of civilization
Is the divided personality of mine,
Countless questions agitate my mind:
Beware! I come as a ghost of myself.

In this forbidden hour of life’s dark-night
I summon you, Ghost of my Self!
