The Strange Stranger

Jatindra Mohan Ganguli

No, I said and walked away;
No reason, no rhyme, in what you say.

God’s not here or there,
On right or left;

But in dream and faith,
No way, no light that showeth.

I look around, where’s He?
False, untrue, no proof I see.

You go blind,
I argue, reason and find.

On ahead fast I go
And call God to show.

Night came cold and dark,
Which way to turn, I ask.

Which way my home?
In fear I stood alone.

No way, no sign, no light,
But then came a Figure bright.

“I take you home,
Why here alone?”

He said and smiled,
I stared surprised.

He looked but good and true,
My faith in Him grew.

“Come”–again He said,
And my arm held.

Strange stranger was He,
But sure to home took me.

Who was He?
How came at end of day?

I asked my Reason,
Reason but failed to say.
