HASMUKH PATHAK

(Translated from Gujarati by P. MACHWE)

Slowly
(and so under a whip-lash)
moves
on the north-south road
a he-buffalo numbered.
And at the corner, far away
on the asphalt road east-west bound
a crowded bus (no more space for people)
angry, runs fast.
And...at the cross, happened what always happens.

A pool of blood, pieces of flesh
broken horns.
Eyes try to combine all and make one
And that he-buffalo open-eyed
gaging the void breathing his last.
(Lord of Death also arrived there, at last)
The hide of the carcass (taken away at distance)
will be flayed
by that time the blood has clotted and dried in heat.

Bus (again crowded, with new faces)
returned hastily from the west...
and... and… here is a spot
don’t talk about it
