The Song of a Devi

Jeannine Herrault

Miles of sky equal to a sea
Hills succeeding in humps
A snake river shifting her rings of water
And four green birds upon a tree:
I ride inside the changing face of Time.

With the knight Arthur walking through my fingers
Restless
I seek the endless scheme of things.
Fairies and bodies of air
Unseen, make feel a root of Truth.

As leaves fall in ritual tune
All sound is vision
And outline, music.

The east wind and the west wind
I twist to blended strings
The labourer and the mariner follow my lonely ways
As all shores meet, lip to lip.

My witches gaze
My angel eyes
Unstitch the hem of night
Luminiscently I see the rainbow lights inside.

Over the lawn
Unicorns tear a pale dawn.
