Sui Generis

M. G. Venkatesaiya

I
I long to see
                        Your features;
But You have
No form.
I long to touch
                        Your contours;
But You have
No body.
                        You walk into my
Fickle mind
With a march
Unperceived.
Yet the deep silence
Brings me
A voice bewitching and
Harmonious.

II
Oft haven’t I
Praised You
Without adequate
Meed?
Oft condemn'd You

                        Without chastisement

Meet?
did it occur
To me
                        You couldn’t be
So chained,
By words of praise
Of sounding air
That flow from a
Mortal’s mouth.

III

What manner of
Interpretation,
What path of
Meditation,
Can bring You nearer
To me?
Can man born of man
Clasp You that have
No birth
No death?
