Flying Without Wings

O. P. Bhagat

There are moments when I,
Without any aid or device,
Can fly in the air.

I don't have even to wish
Or use my power of will.
I feel it in my bones
That I have the gift of flight,
And I fly as I please.
Now I rise above the ground
And, feeling feather-weight,
Glide from here to there
More easily than a bird.
Now I dart up into the sky
And go to any height
Of far-off destination.
Now, just for the fun of it,
I swim above and around
In the sea of air
Like a god on holiday.

There are moments when I,
In my dreams,
Can fly in the air.
To me these dreams are real
Like the events of daily life,
And I little care what
They symbolise.
