A Rain of Light

Vasantharao Venkata Rao

I saw a rain of light.
Just as the sun was about to set
A cloud arose, from the west,
Like a chain of mountains.
Thro the dales and crevices
There was a rain of light,
A steady shower, dim and lovely.
Slowly the cloud transformed itself into a mighty lion,
With head, mane, body, legs and tail
All exquisite and well-proportioned.
Looking with rapt attention
I found the lion changing itself into a mountain range
Which opened its mouth
And slowly gulped the sun.
The agonising cries of the swallowed sun
Shot up fanwise.
The lips of the mountain range
Shone brilliant–not with lipstick red–
But with piercing brightness,
A sign of victory.
