The Laurels

N. Balamani Amma

BY N. BALAMANI AMMA
(Translated by the Author from the original in Malayalam)

I

Through the long long dusky way,
In a victorious march,
I reached the Kingdom of Earth
And was garlanded with this string of blossoms;
A fount of colours that shine and die;
A ripple of primeval joy that brings purity in its wake.

II

Entrapped was my soul in the tight embrace
Of this softness embodied.
My star-crowned head bowed to inhale
Its fragrance sweet;
My heart, drunk with the light of Infinity,
Stooped to suck its honey-drops;
My hands, laden with the treasures of the Universe,
Bent to pluck the petals of its roses.

III

They fade, these blossoms that open
The jewelled portals of beauty,
They drop one by one, before my fond gaze.
Transitory this garland: let it be.
Am I not the prospective conqueror of this world!
Am I, not destined to wear the laurels,
Won from myriad spheres of splendour?

At the journey’s end,
As I regain the abode of peace,
There shall lie dormant in me,
The perfume of garlands innumerable.
