The Lonesome Pine

Anil Palmer

A lonesome Pine in a Garden grew
With the rose, the champaka, and the yew
Fed by the drops of the early dew
It gently drooped as the darkness drew

Till one eve a hard-pressed bird
From the harrows of a took
Among its boughs a shelter took.
Nor flutter, nor other sound was heard

Save a chirp: for the bird content
Had built a nest with fair intent
Of dwelling with the lonesome Pine
In the sunshine:

Dark was the dawn; the bird asleep,
When a tamer close did creep
And tore the inmate from its nest
And all the rest.

Yon lonesome Pine in the Garden grows
With the rose, the champaka, and the yew
But it sheds the tears of the early dew
And droops ere the darkness draws.
