Earthen Jars

BY YESHWANT

(Translated from Marathi by Prof. S. B. Ranade)

[Charitable institutions are opened for supplying water to thirsty travellers in the desert in summer. Life is a similar journey through the dreary desert of Pain, Misery and Disappointments. The Poet is offering his poems for the consolation of the thirsty travellers.]

Come brother! Here am I ready to offer water for the thirsty travellers.
All are welcome, be they of any caste or creed.
In the burning heat of summer and life
Not a drop of water but sweat and tears.
In the deceitful winds of the wavy mirage,
In the scorching winds, we swoon at every step.
Not a patch of shade; glares a white hot sun overhead,
Come weary traveller, welcome to this resting place.
I have carried on my shoulders the crystal water–the inspiration of the ancient bards.
Only the earthen jars are mine,–the jars that keep the refreshing water cool.
Drink a handful or two or have your fill.
Refresh yourself and regain energy to resume your journey on foot.
Thy blessing is the only reward I crave for in this life.
