Kurukshetra-pradípa. A guide to the sacred places in the
holy land of Kurukshetra. By Vanamáli Mis'ra, son of Mahes'a Mis'ra,
an inhabitant of Kurukshetra, and disciple of Bhattojí Díkshita.
CONTENTS. Pre-eminence of Kurukshetra as a place of sanctity.
Merit of pilgrimage thereto. Its seven Vanas or forests including
Aditivana, Kámyavana, Súryavana, &c. Praise of the river Saras'vatí.
Praise of Gangá. Extent and boundary of Kurukshetra. Its synonyms.
The lake called Rámahrada. Origin of Kurukshetra. Its merits during
eclipses and on particular months. The merit of shaving off the hair
of the head there. Topography of the different sacred spots. Persons
fit to make a pilgrimage thereto. Rules for pilgrimage. Religious
duties to be performed there. Special accounts of the following sacred

S'aṅkbiní, Brahmávarta, Aṃs'umatí, Kames'vara-kás'ís'vara, Mátri,
Mánusa, Vriddhakedára, Durgákshetra, Vates'varavindhya, Pundaríka-
nága, Drishadvatí, Parvata, Amritasthána, Káraṇḍavádi, Vyásahrada,
Naimísha, Manas, Dugdhaśrava, &c. Most of those places are
connected with incidents of the great fratricidal war of the Kurus and
the Pándus, but a good many are recent creations.
