By Bhatta Somadeva. The character of this work is already well known
to European scholars through the notices published by Wilson and
others; and the whole of the text has been brought out, partly in San-
skrit and partly in Roman type, by the learned Professor Weber
(Abhandlungen II to IV.) ; it is not necessary therefore to enter at
length into its history. The headings of the stories are given below
in Sanskrit. The MS. is dated Samvat 1682, and is nearly two hun-
dred and fifty years old.
Beginning. श्रियं दिशतु वः शम्भोः श्यामः कण्ठेा मनोभुवा ।
यङ्कस्थ पार्व्वतीदृष्टिपाशेनेव विचेष्टितः ॥
सन्ध्यान्टत्योत्सवे धारा [śriyaṃ diśatu vaḥ śambhoḥ śyāmaḥ kaṇṭheा manobhuvā |
yaṅkastha pārvvatīdṛṣṭipāśeneva viceṣṭitaḥ ||
sandhyānṭatyotsave dhārā

शीत्कारशीकरै रत्याः सल्पयन्निव पातु वः ॥
प्रणम्य वाचं निःशेषपदार्थद्यतदीपिकां ।

च्याद्यमत्र कथापीठं कथामुखमतः परं ।

ततो लावणको नाम तृतीयो लम्बको भवेत् ॥
नरवाहनदत्तस्य जननञ्च ततः परं ।
स्याच्चतुर्दारिका चाथ ततो मदनमञ्जका ॥
ततो रत्नप्रभा नाम लम्बकः सप्तमो भवेत् ।
सूर्य्यप्रभाभिधानश्च लम्बकखाष्टमा भवेत् ॥
अलङ्कारवती नाम ततः शक्तियशा भवे ।
वेलालम्बकसञ्ज्ञश्च भवेदेकादशस्ततः ॥
शशाङ्कवत्यपि ततस्ततश्च मदिरावती ।
महाभिषकनामा च ततः स्यात् पञ्चलम्बकः ॥
ततः सुरतमञ्जर्य्यप्यथ पद्मावती भवेत् ।
ततो विषमशीलाख्यो लम्बकोऽष्टादशो भवेत् ॥
यथा मूलं तथैवैतन्न मनागप्यतिक्रमः ।
ग्रन्थविस्तरसङ्क्षेपमाचं भाषा च विद्यते ॥
कौचित्यान्वयरक्षा च यथाशक्त्या विधीयते ।
यथा रसाभिघातेन काव्यांशस्य च योजना ॥
वैदग्ध्यख्यातिले।भाय मम नैवायमुद्यमः ।
किन्तु नानाकथाजा लक्ष्मतिमा कार्य्यसिद्धये ॥ इत्यादिः ।

śītkāraśīkarai ratyāḥ salpayanniva pātu vaḥ ||
praṇamya vācaṃ niḥśeṣapadārthadyatadīpikāṃ |

naravāhanadattasya jananañca tataḥ paraṃ |

sūryyaprabhābhidhānaśca lambakakhāṣṭamā bhavet ||
alaṅkāravatī nāma tataḥ śaktiyaśā bhave |
velālambakasañjñaśca bhavedekādaśastataḥ ||
śaśāṅkavatyapi tatastataśca madirāvatī |
mahābhiṣakanāmā ca tataḥ syāt pañcalambakaḥ ||
tataḥ suratamañjaryyapyatha padmāvatī bhavet |
tato viṣamaśīlākhyo lambako'ṣṭādaśo bhavet ||
yathā mūlaṃ tathaivaitanna manāgapyatikramaḥ |
granthavistarasaṅkṣepamācaṃ bhāṣā ca vidyate ||
kaucityānvayarakṣā ca yathāśaktyā vidhīyate |
yathā rasābhighātena kāvyāṃśasya ca yojanā ||
vaidagdhyakhyātile|bhāya mama naivāyamudyamaḥ |
kintu nānākathājā lakṣmatimā kāryyasiddhaye || ityādiḥ |
