This is the first part of one of the great Puranas attributed to Vyasa. The Padma is divided into five parts ; 1 st, Srishti khanda ; 2 nd, Bhumi khanda ; 3 rd, Svarga khanda ; 4 th, Patala Khanda; 5 th, Uttara Khanda. In the first, the work under notice, Ugrasravas describes, in reply to the enquiry of the sages assembled at the Naimisha hermitage, the origin of the universe, and the development of the creation, relating at the same time detached accounts of the geography of India. The translators under Dr. Wilson rendered a great portion of it into English, a MS. of which exists in the Asiatic Society of Bengal, and another in the India House Library.
