28. The Chronology of Brahmadeva’s Commentary on the Siddhayoga of Vrinda- # Between c. A. D. 900 and 1100 * Aufrecht makes the following entries about a dharmasastra author of the name Brahmadeva:CC I, 83 -- ' karmavipaka dh by brahmadeva B. 3. 74. ' He also mentions a work on medicine called the fin the following entry:A CC I, 83 med B. 4. 220. Radh 31.' In the above entry the author of the is not indicated but it is possible that it may be the work of a medical author of the name about whom I want to record the following information:Srikanthadatta (c. A. D. 1275-1300) pupil of fac (c. 1240 A. D.)' refers to an author brahmadeva in his vyakhya kusumavali ' on vrndamadhava or f in the following quotations:P. 9 - " atha sribrahmadevavyakhya - langhanasabda upavasaparyayo natu 66 vamanavirecananuvasanadiparyayah | " P. 12- yah samavasthayam marutajvaro yaksmajvarasca sa langhaniya iti brahmadevani || 32 || " P. 18 - " atra sunthayatikta'pyamasayasamutthe ubare pacanatvadvihiteti sri- brahmadevah 9.9 Indian Culture, Vol. XI, pp. 36-39. 1. Vide p. 17 of Hoernle Osteology, London, 1907. 2. Pub. Anandasrama Series No. 27, Poona, 1894. One bhisaj completed the vyakhyakusumavali of Srikanthadatta as stated by him in the three verses at the end of the edition. I shall prove in a special paper that flourished between c. A. D. 1350 and 1400. It is difficult to say whether the references to in the vyakhya kusumavali are made by srikanthadatta or by narayana bhisaj 191 •

P. 583 - " mandyam hyarupatvamabhipretam na punah slesmopahatasyeva mandyamiti | iti - sribrahmadevah " P. 599 - " tarjanyangusthagramatram grahyam curnam muccutimatramiti brahmadevah " It appears from the foregoing quotations that a commentary on the by a writer of the name was in existence, say, between A. D. 1250 and 1350 as it is mentioned and quoted from by either Srikanthadatta or Narayanabhisaj in the on f. This commentary has not been mentioned by Aufrecht and hence it would be worth while tracing quotations from it in sources prior to Srikanthadatta's time. Hemadri, the minister of King Ramacandra of Devagiri (A. D. 1271-1309), composed a commentary on the Astangahrdaya of Vagbhata II called the Ayurvedara sayana,' in which we find the following reference to brahmadevah- 66 asavasya surayasca dvayorapyekabhajane | sandhanam tadvijaniyanmaireyamubhayatmakam || iti jejjato brahmadevasca | " Possibly the author of the name a quoted from and mentioned by Hemadri is identical with his namesake, the author of a commentary on the f mentioned by the authors of the Kusumavalivyakhya. If this suggestion is accepted we are warranted in concluding that 3 is earlier than A. D. 1200 or so. Dallana in his commentary on the Susrutasamhita refers to in the following extracts:- 1. Edited by Hari Shastri Paradkar in his edition of Astangahrdaya, N. S. Press, Bombay, 1939. 2. Ibid., p. 136. 3. An author of the name composed a work on astronomy called T c. A. D. 1092 (Saka 1014) (vide p. 240 of History of Indian Astronomy by S. B. Dikshit, Poona, 1896). I cannot say if he is identical with the medical author, the subject of the present paper. Another author wrote a commentary on the off, tenth century (A. D). Vide H. D. Velankar's Jinaratnakosa (B. O. R. I.) under". " 4. Vide p. 1 of Susruta samhita with Dallana's commentary ed. by A. C. Hoernle assigns Dallana to 'twelfth century', i. e. to a period between 1100 and 1200 A. D. We may, therefore, assign Brahmadeva to a period prior to A. D. 1100. As Brahmadeva commented the Siddhayoga of Vrnda he is later than Vrnda, whom Sir P. C. Ray 2 assigns to circa 900 A. D. We may, therefore, assign Brahmadeva to a period between c. A. D. 900 and 1100. 1. Vide p. 16 of Osteology, Part I, 1907 - dallana is quoted by Hemadri (c. 1260 A. D. ) and quotes Cakrapanidatta (c. 1060 A. D.). He also quotes bhoja . 2.
