Buhari- Buharni- } BUHARI [buharan]-the common broom; terms almost peculiar to the Buharu - Baniya or merchant caste. Buhna to put a cow to a bull, West districts (buhana). Bujharat-[bujhand = to explain] (hisab fahmi) settlement of accounts; the special account of the receipts and charges of the proprietors kept by the village accountant. -Bujha [bujhana = to explain] a wizard; a cunning or "knowing" man. West districts, Oudh, and Rohilkhand (jadugar). Bujni-a woman's ear ornament. Buk-lands recovered by the retrocession of a river. Rohilkhand. Bukara- (baluburd) -land rendered useless by Bukara-S a deposit of sand. Rohilkhand. Bukhari-a structure of straw or wicker-work used as a granary. Central Dunb (bakhar). Bukiha-[bok = a leather irrigation-bag]-the man who drives the oxen and empties the bag at a well. West districts (pairha). Bukk- as much grain, etc., as can be carried in both hands; a harvest perquisite (anjal). Bukka- Bukta- Bulaq-(besar)-lit, the septum of the nose; a nose-ring worn by women in the septum of the nose: the nath (qv.) goes through the side of the nostril. Bulandi-[Pers. buland = high]-high lands (bangar). Bunara [bunnd = to weave]-the net at the bottom of a pony-cart (ekka). Bunavat-[bunnd = to weave]-(1) the twine netting of a bed; (2) the texture of cloth; (3) wages for weaving cloth. Buncha-see bucha. Bund-Skt. vindu]-a drop; a drop of rain. Light drizzling rain is bundi-bandi. Bunda [bund, Skt. vindu = a drop]-an earring or spangle worn on the forehead. Bunda- Bunda Bundi- } an ox or cow with only one horn, or a broken horn, or having a short tail or no tail (dunda). Bundi- Bunna-see bunda. Bunt-[Skt. vrinta]-ripe pods of gram, usually kept for parching (but). Bunta-[see bunt]-flowers impressed on cloth by a calico-printer (buta). Bunti-[see bunt]-(1) leaves of the narcotic hemp (ganja); (2) flowers printed on cloth (buta); (3) hemp stalks. Rohilkhand (san). Bur(1) (gabuda, gul) -the male ear of maize; (2) chaff, bran. Bhare bych men bur khai; Ab kya khaegi khasam ke agar? [When at my wedding I got only bran to eat; what will I get to eat in my husband's house?] Bura coarse dry brown or whitish sugar. Bura-[burna = to be submerged]-(1) of a well, stream, etc., deep enough to drown a man; (2) a redeemable mortgage. East districts. Burha-(1) [Skt. vridha]-an old man; in the Central Duab a father. Jis ghar burha na bara, Woh ghar dagmaga. 52 BYAH [That family totters where there is no elder to advise.] Burhe munh mahaxe Log aye tamashe. [People stare at an old man's face with the pimples of boyhood on it.] (2) The cotton-like flowers of the madar plant; (3) the headman of a village. Kumaun. Burha Babu - see Bucha Babu. Burhali- [burha = 3]-lands or privileges at- Burhali-) tached to the headship of a village, Kumaun. Burhi [Skt. vriddha] an old woman; in Burhiya- Burida- [Pers. buridan = to cut down]- Buridah-} crops cut by stealth by a cultivator to avoid paying rent. Rohilkhand. Burj-lit. a bastion; a pile of chaff or straw Burji- thatched for use (mandal). Burka-(gulla) a piece of sugarcane chewed at the Central Dunb a mother. one time. West districts. Burqa- a long woman's sheet with eye-holes, Burqah- worn by Muhammadan women. Burri-sowing seed in the furrow left by the plough. West districts (bona). Bursi-(horsi)-a pot for holding fire, such as is used by a goldsmith. But- Buta - see bunt, bunta, bunti. Buti- } Butra rog-a cattle disease prevalent in Lalitpur, the symptoms being swelling of the neck and great irritation of the bowels (purba rog). Byadh- [Skt. vyadha = piercing; a wound]- Byadha- a disease in millets, sugarcane, and maize (barhiya). Byah-[Skt. vivaha] (bibah, jhajera, nikah, shadi) the marriage ceremony. There is an elaborate account of the ritual as practised in the hills, in Atkinson's Himalayan Gazetteer, II, 906. For Brahmans, according to Sherring (Hindu Castes, I, 13), "the ceremony of marriage (byak) has fourteen divisions and grada. tions, as follows: (1) bagdan. The bride's father proceeds to the house of the bridegroom, and after worshipping him, and making presents of money, cloth, and other things, utters these words- I will give my daughter to these.' In some cases the bridegroom himself goes to the house of the bride. (2) Simantini pujan. The bridegroom accompanied by all the members of his family goes to the bride's house, whereupon both bride and bridegroom are worshipped: first the bride's party worships the bridegroom, and then the bridegroom's party worships the bride. (3) Hardi uthand. Turmeric and oil having been sent from the bride's house to the bridegroom, are rubbed upon his body: he then bathes; after which the ceremonies of worship of Ganesh (Ganesh pujan), -Punyah vachan, Matrika pujan, and Nandi shradh-are performed. (4) Barat-marriage procession. The bridegroom and his friends go in state to the house of the bride. (5) Madhu parakh. Kusha grass being placed on a wooden seat, the bride- bride-F groom is made to sit upon it. Thereupon honey, curds, and sweatmeats are given him to eat, and various presents are placed before him.
