( () (4) Mahakarttiki In the month of Karttika and on the day of Paurnami when it is associated with the nakshatra Rohini in Sunday, the yoga is called Mahakarttiki. It is as auspecious as Govinda-dvadasi for sacred functions, like snanam and danam, In No. 151 above we find that a grant was made in the temple of Madhukesvara at Mukhalinga in Sakavda 1056, in Karttika-masa, Brahmadina, when there was Rohini Nakshatra in Sunday. According to Swamikannu Pillai, the Mahakarttiki will occur when Karttika-Paurnami would associate with the nakshatra Rohini (Vide Indian Ephemeris, Vol. I, pt. i, pp. 63 ff) From dharma-sastras we quote the following verses regarding the yogamoment:- " satanande - agneyam su yada rutam karttivayam tu bhavet kvacit | mahati sa tithijnaya snanadanesu cottama || " In the Vishnu Purana the following verses explain the actual position of Mahakarttiki and its auspecious moment : " bisakhayam yada suryyascaratyam satariyakam tada candra ' bijaniya krttikasirasamsthitam || krttikayam yada candra prathamamsam vrajet kvacit | mahati sa tithijnaya snanadanesu cottama ||| yada yamya tu brajati ruksa ' bapi rabih kvacit | tithih sapi mahapunya rusibhih parikittita || prajapatya tatha ruksa tithaitasya naradhipa | sa mahakarttiki prokta devanamapi durlabhah "
