Some time before 1896, Mr. C. J. Weir, I. C. S., the then District Collector of Ganjam, sent this set of copper plate grant to Dr. Hultzsch for examination. No further information regarding the find spot of it is now forthcoming. Dr, Kielhorn edited the same in E. 1. IV, pp. 198-201, without facsimile. The plates are three in number, each measuring about 7"x 3". The ring is missing. Dr. Kielhorn gives the purport of the grant as quoted below: a .. "The inscription is one of Mahindravarmadeva's son, the devout worshipper of Mahesvara (Siva), the Maharajadhiraja-Paramesvara Paramabhata raka, the ornament of the spotless family of the Gangas, the lord of the excellent city of Kolahala, the Maharaja Prthivivarmadeva, who had obtained store of merit by worshipping the lotus-feet of the holy lord Gokarnesvara, dwelling on the summit of mount Mahendra, and who by the excellence of the three constituents of his regal power had attached to himself the whole circle of feudatories, and had acquired by the valorous strength of his arms the sovereignty over all Kalinga. From his residence at Svetka (Svetaka) the king by this document informs his officials and the inhabitants concerned, that on the occasion of an equinox he gave a village in the Ja[no]ra vishaya to the Bhattiputra Subhankara, (a Brahmana) of the Vatsa gotra, who was a student of the Vajasaneya charana belonged to the Kanva sakha, and had the fivefold pravara, Bhargava, Chyavana, Apnavan, Aurva and Jamadagni, - in such a manner that the donee under this deed was entitled to the yearly receipt of four Polas in silver. - The inscription was written by the Sanidhivigrahin, or minister of peace and war, amant, engraved by the brazier Samanta - Svayambhu, and furnished with a seal (? tanchhita) by the chief queen. 1" It is interesting to note that the passage • kolaula parapatta or the Kolahalapura Pattana is for the first time mentioned in this inscription. In the Puranas like Brahmanda (11. 16,21), Vist nu (III. 18.73)

and Vamana (45,90; 105-6) we find that Kolahala was the name of a hill and it was the place where Gayasura performed austerities. Most probably the Kolahala was situated near Mahendra in Ganjam so that a town was established there by that name. A city named Kolapura is mentioned in Brahmanda P. (IV, 44.97) where the goddess Lalita was worshipped,
