Jan., 1970] kasyapakrta visnustutih 11 The epithets of Vamana or Visnu as given in this Vamanastuti of the Vamana-Purana (Adh. 66) also include the epithets which are generally used for Brahma (such as prajadhyaksa 46, virinci 54, hiranyagarbha (v. 1.) 38) and for Siva or Rudra (such as trinayana 188, mahadeva 30, vrsadhvaja (v. 1.) 18, samkara 210, sambhu 212). In this connection the on the following remarks of Nilakantha in his commentary Tandi's Siva-sahasranama-stotra should be kept in mind:- "sarvasmin purane sivaparyayai visnuparyayairva eka eva isvaro'bhiviyate ... prataeva 'mata dhata pitamaha rudro bahrsira babhruriti visnunamasu brahmarudranamani pathyante, tatha 'mahadevo'vyayo harigananathah prajapatiriti sivanamasu visnuprajapatinamani, itaresamitaratra | " (Comm. on Mbh. XIII. 17. 54). [In all the Puranas by the epithets of Siva or Visnu the one and the same God is praised... Hence in the epithets of Visnu the epithets of Brahma and Rudra are given; Similarly, in the epithets of Siva the epithets of Visnu and Prajapati (Brahma) are given, and in the epithets of the other gods the epithets of some other gods are included]. This prose nama-stuti of Vamana (Visnu) contains also the names of several primeval avataras or incarnations of Visnu, such as mahamina 140, asvagriva 208 (also hayasirsa v. 1. 98), nrkesari 142, vamana 97 and trivikrama 222; but there is no mention of the later avataras here. This fact may give us some indication as to the time of the composition of this stuti. It is the only stuti out of the four prose nama-stutis of Visnu, mentioned above, which imitates the Rgvedic Purusa-sukta in L. 34-40, and mentions the Vedic names of the twelve months of the year among the names of Vamana - Visnu ( epithets 192-203). Its importance also lies in the fact that it contains a larger number of sacrificial terms, such as vasatkara 117, svahakara 118, vausatkara 119, yajamanamaya 123, yajnamaya 124, yajnabhokta 126, yajna 136, hota 144, homya 145, havya 146, huyamana 147, hayamedha 148, srugbhanda 161, yasta 168, brahma 172, hota 173, udgata 174, diksa 185, daksina 186, pragvamsakaya 216. This rajna terminology is quite befitting in the stuti of Vamana, for the yajna of the Demonking Bali formed the centre of Vamana's exploits. And 'Vamana' as the epithet of Visnu has been mentioned in this stuti only, and not in the other three prose nama-stutis. - ANAND SWARUP GUPTA
