NOTE ON THE VAMANA-STUTI This Vamana-stuti was uttered by Brahma when God Vamana after giving the heaven to Indra renounced his dwarf-form and went to the abode of Brahma (Brahma-sadana). There he showed to Brahma at his request his cosmic form embracing all the gods in it (). It is primarily the nama.stuti of Vamana-Visnu, it praises the God by reciting his different names or epithets which are expressive of his various qualities. Such nama-stutis are very popular in sanskrit religious literature, for they give a glimpse to the nature of the Reality represented by the Deity so praised. Of the available nama-stutis some are in verse, such as the famous Visnusahasra-nama-stotra (Mbh. XIII. 149), Siva-sahasra-nama-stotra by Tandi (Mbh. XIII 17), Devi (Parvati)-Sahastra-nama-stotra by Daksa (Kurma-P., I. 12), etc., and some are in prose, such as the present Vamana-stuti by Brahma. There are three more parallel nama-stutis of Visnu in prose. The four prose nama-stutis contain the different numbers of the epithets of Visnu, as noted below :- 1. Vamana-stuti by Brahma in Vam.-P. (V), Adh. 66. (222 epithets). 2. Visnu-stuti by Kasyapa in Vam.-P., Saro-mahatmya (S), Adh. 5. (131 epithets). 3. Visnu-stuti by Narada in Mbh. (M), XII. 338. (199 epithets). 4. Visnu-stuti by Vasudha (Earth) in Visnu-Smrti (VS). Adh. 98, (100 epithets). These four prose nama-stutis of Visnu contain many common and similar epithets of Visnu. In this Vamana-stuti of the Vam.-P. (Adh. 66) as published here the epithets have been numbered for the sake of reference, while in the Visnu-stuti by Narada in the Mbh. (Chitrasala-Press Edn.) and in the Visnu-stuti by Vasudha in the Visnu-Smrti (Edn. Adyar Library, Madras, 1964) the epithets have already been numbered. The Visnu-stuti by Kasyapa of the Saro-mahatmya of the Vam.-P. (Critical Edn.) is reproduced below for numbering the epithets contained there-in, for the sake of reference.
