Summary: This essay represents and English study of the Vishnu-Smriti: an ancient Sanskrit Sutra belonging to the Dharmashastra branch of Hindu knowledge. It deals with the rules of various traditions and customs such as Castes, Monarchy, Criminal and Civil Law, Penances and Asceticism. The Vishnu-smriti consists of one hundred chapters and is presented in the form of a dialogue between Vishnu and Prithvi (the goddess Earth).
