Vernacular Architecture and Material Culture

The vernacular architecture is primarily regarded as a constituent of the Material Culture. In fact, vernacular architecture is Material Culture as the tangible forms of architecture are fashioned by the folk people through technology, skill, manipulation of materials and relevant cultural knowledge. The vernacular architecture includes the forms created to cater the needs and demands of the folk people in tune with the topography and culture. Thus, the manifested form of architecture is material culture. The material culture is very important part of the culture and folklore.

Viewed from the perspective of Folklore, the forms of the vernacular architecture can be regarded as the text while its cultural significance and setting is the context. The architectural form incorporates the general appearance, materials, technique, space it defines, and organization of space. In contrast, the significance, people’s credence, and implication of architecture are culture specific, which can be said as the context. As a variety of material culture, the architecture is primarily utilitarian in nature and purpose. But, the folk people often infuse his creativity and aesthetic sensibility at different levels to satisfy his urge. This quality of the aestheticism in the architecture can be regarded as textural quality.
