Statement of the Problem

The objective drawn nature of the present study is primarily exploratory and descriptive. Therefore, there is a stress on the collection, record, analysis, comparison, and compilation of the various aspects of the residential vernacular architecture tradition of Assam.

However, along with these focuses, the study endeavours to throw light on the following aspects related to the topic:

1) The survey and study of the vast array of the vernacular architecture of the state is a necessity and prime intent of the study. Thus, the study aims to throw light on traditional homesteads, built environment, technique, and other related aspects.

2) The study will endeavour to stylistic categorization of the vernacular architecture of the state and comparative analysis of the styles.

3) Serious attempt will made to trace the evolution and development of the vernacular architecture of the state.

4) The study intends to examine different genres of vernacular architecture, functional forms, and their respective technique.

5) The study aims to discuss different styles through representative examples and throw light on different aspects of the architectural traditions of respective communities.

6) The VAs, being a part of the traditional built environment and folklore, possess immense socio-cultural significance. Therefore, there will have attempt to focus the socio-cultural, aesthetic, and folkloric significance of the vernacular architecture of the state.

7) The study intends to examine the issues of continuity of the vernacular architecture and examine the relevance and validity of these architectures as well as the traditional housing technique in the contemporary situation.

8) Lastly, as the contemporary global ecological and environmental crises are major concern of the present time and the relevance of sustainable development is a much-sought priority of the time. So, the eco-friendly, sustainable development agendas mostly have solution within traditional knowledge. Hence, it will be relevant to enquire and find solution to address such contemporary crisis through the traditional architecture.
