This page relates ‘Sanskrit Grammarians (2): Jayaditya’ of the study on the Vasudevavijaya of Vasudeva from the 11th century A.D. The Vasudevavijayam is an educational poem belonging to the Shastra-Kavya category of technical Sanskrit literature. The Vasudevavijayam depicts in 657 verses the story of Lord Krishna while also elucidates the grammatical rules of the Ashtadhyayi of Panini (teaching the science of grammar). The subject-content of the poem was taken from the tenth Skandha of the Bhagavatapurana.

Jayāditya is a Sanskrit Grammarian. Jayāditya and Vāmana together compose the work Kāśikāvṛtti.

jayādityaśca vāmanaśca etau dvau vaiyākaraṇau
vyākaraṇaparamparāyāṃ samaṣṭirūpeṇa vyavahartī |

Vāsudeva has quoted the name Jayāditya to explain the derivation of a word. For the propriety of the word upadaśya,[1] the conditions for fixing the ktvā is discussed. Here Vāsudeva stated that according to Jayāditya, when there is deference in the action (kriyā), it can be employed the ktvā affix.[2]

In another context Vāsudeva quotes Vṛtti which can be identified as the Kāśikāvṛtti of Jayāditya and Vāmana. It is at the time of discussing the word adharmajugupsu which is an example for the compound rule pañcamī bhayena | Here it is said that the word can be used as adharmajugupsuḥ as per vṛtti.[3] The term Vṛtti introduced by Vāsudeva might be kāśikāvṛtti | Here it is noted that Vāsudeva only mentions Jayāditya in Vāsudevavijaya, But the name of Vāmana does not cite in it.
