This page relates ‘Bhagavata (extracts from Bhagavatapurana)’ of the study on the Vasudevavijaya of Vasudeva from the 11th century A.D. The Vasudevavijayam is an educational poem belonging to the Shastra-Kavya category of technical Sanskrit literature. The Vasudevavijayam depicts in 657 verses the story of Lord Krishna while also elucidates the grammatical rules of the Ashtadhyayi of Panini (teaching the science of grammar). The subject-content of the poem was taken from the tenth Skandha of the Bhagavatapurana.

Bhāgavata (extracts from Bhāgavatapurāṇa)

Besides these four disciplines, some extracts from Bhāgavatapurāṇa is also found referred to in Vāsudevavijaya It is already stated that the theme of the poem is taken from Bhāgavatapurāṇa. At the same time, Vāsudeva is a great devotee of Lord Kṛṣṇa, and hence he shows too much interest in quoting Bhāgavatapurāṇa.

When describing the wedding ceremony of Vāsudeva and Devakī, Vāsudeva depicts the qualities of the groom. The one who do not lightened the holy rites for the sake of wealth; lustre etc.[1] In this context, Vāsudeva quotes a line from Bhāgavata in order to satisfy this statement.

ye svadharme dahayanti dhīrāḥ kāmārthahetave |

Likewise, another verse from Bhāgavata is quoted in another context by Vāsudeva.

mandākinīti ca divi bhogavatīti
cādhogaṃgeti ceha caraṇāmbu punāti viśvam ||
[2]

The verse is quoted to make clear the difference between Gaṅgā and Surasindhu. Vāsudeva says gaṃgā bhūlokavartinī surasindhurākāśagaṃgeti bhedaḥ |[3] It is described on the occasion of the Davāgnipāna(drinking the forest fire). Kṛṣṇa and his friends set out with cattle to the forest region near the banks of Yamunā.[4]

Thus quotation from the source text i.e. Bhāgavata is also found in V.V. It proves the devotion of Vāsudeva to Lord Kṛṣṇa and his interest towards ŚrīmadBhāgavata.
