This page relates ‘Karaka (b): Hetu’ of the study on the Vasudevavijaya of Vasudeva from the 11th century A.D. The Vasudevavijayam is an educational poem belonging to the Shastra-Kavya category of technical Sanskrit literature. The Vasudevavijayam depicts in 657 verses the story of Lord Krishna while also elucidates the grammatical rules of the Ashtadhyayi of Panini (teaching the science of grammar). The subject-content of the poem was taken from the tenth Skandha of the Bhagavatapurana.

To attain the Vivakṣitārtha, without depending on the Vyāpāras and which acts as a Nimitta is called Hetu. The rule tatprayojako hetuśca (1/4/55) defines Hetu as the agent by which another is prompted is called Hetu also (The same can be termed already as Agent.).

Bhartṛhari opines—

anāśrite tu vyāpāre nimittaṃ heturiṣyate |
āśritāvadhibhāve tu lakṣaṇe lakṣaṇaṃ viduḥ ||
[1]

Pāṇini uses this term in the sense of prompter in the rules hetumati ca (3/1/26) and bhiyo hetubhaye ṣuk (7/3/40). Likewise he uses this in the sense of cause in the rules hetau (2/3/23) and yenāṅgavikāraḥ (2/3/20).

Vāsudeva illustrates for the terms Kartṛ and Hetu accordingly the rule tatprayojako hetuśca (1/4/55) in the above verse i.e. Vāsudevavijaya 3.46 (which is quoted to show the example of agent). There the word lālapā gets the Kartṛ and Hetusaṃjñā by the above said rule.
