This page relates ‘Sandhi (d): Svadisandhi’ of the study on the Vasudevavijaya of Vasudeva from the 11th century A.D. The Vasudevavijayam is an educational poem belonging to the Shastra-Kavya category of technical Sanskrit literature. The Vasudevavijayam depicts in 657 verses the story of Lord Krishna while also elucidates the grammatical rules of the Ashtadhyayi of Panini (teaching the science of grammar). The subject-content of the poem was taken from the tenth Skandha of the Bhagavatapurana.

There are some rules in Pāṇinīya with regard to Svādisandhi. These are related to the combination of case endings. Vāsudeva incorporates these rules in Vāsudevavijaya for illustration. The rule sasajuṣo ruḥ (8/2/66) is the first among them. It means that for the final s and for the of sajuṣ is substituted ru, at the end of a word.

Vāsudeva gives example for this rule in the verse,

dvaimāturādisurasaṃghatanorasoḍhurdaiteyadurvilasitāni gaveśvarasya |
ceto harervidadhatī padayorguṇaiḥ svaiḥ patyurmano'haradatho atulairvadhūḥ sā ||
(Vāsudevavijaya 1.65)

Here in this word, mano'harad which can be splitted as manas + aharat, the s in the word manas is substituted by r as per the rule sasajuṣeruḥ | Then it will be manar aharat

Another rule regarding Svādisandhi is also applicable here i.e. ato roraplutādaplute (6/1/113). It means, the letter u is the substitute for ru (the r substitute of final s), when an a, which is not a pluta, both precedes and follows it. Here in manar aharat, the ris preceded and followed by an apluta, so it will be substituted by u, then the form mana u aharat | Then by the rule ād guṇaḥ, Guṇa applies here and will get the form mano'harat |

The verse has one more example regarding Svādisandhi. The rule haśi ca (6/1/114) is exemplified here as ceto hareḥ | The u is the substitute of ru (the r substitute of s) when it is followed by a soft consonant and preceded by an apluta short a | In the state, cetas + hareḥ, the s will be substituted by r by the rule sasajuṣo ruḥ and it will be cetar + hareḥ | Then the r of here is preceded by an apluta short a, and followed by ha | Hence it will be replaced by u | ceta u hareḥceto hareḥ |

Thus Vāsudeva illustrates all rules regarding Svādisandhi except one or two rules.
