This page relates ‘Paniniya-sutrodaharana-kavya’ of the study on the Vasudevavijaya of Vasudeva from the 11th century A.D. The Vasudevavijayam is an educational poem belonging to the Shastra-Kavya category of technical Sanskrit literature. The Vasudevavijayam depicts in 657 verses the story of Lord Krishna while also elucidates the grammatical rules of the Ashtadhyayi of Panini (teaching the science of grammar). The subject-content of the poem was taken from the tenth Skandha of the Bhagavatapurana.

Pāṇinīya-sūtrodāharaṇa-kāvya

[Full title: Kerala Contribition to Śāstrakāvya Tradition (4): Pāṇinīya-sūtrodāharaṇa-kāvya]

Pāṇinīyasūtrodāharaṇakāvya with its commentary is another poem of this type and the name of the work is given as according to its content. The theme of the poem is the story of Kṛṣṇa. It illustrates Paniniyan rules in its order as seen in Arjunarāvaṇīya. Its author and date is unknown. Some scholars believed that it was composed by a member of Kūṭallūr family.

The text is not available in printed form. A paper manuscript[1] got from Madras manuscript library itself lacks its beginning and end.

The available portion is from the second canto of the second chapter and the preface of this canto is as follows:-

atha dvitīyādhyāyodāharaṇarūpaṃ dvitīyasargamārabhate |[2]

The first verse of this canto is:—

śūrātmajo'tha sumahattarabhāṣyabhūmā chadmāttabālavapuṣaṃ parigṛhya devam |
sūtyalayo jigamiṣuḥ pratinandagehaṃ yāvadbabhūva nigalo vyagalatpadābhyām ||
[3]

The verse illustrates the sūtras samarthaḥ padavidhiḥ (2.1.1), prākkaḍārātsamāsaḥ (2.1.3), saha supā (2.1.4), avyayībhāvaḥ (2.1.5)etc. Obviously this might have been an asset to Sanskrit grammar, if it is available in complete form.
