Part 5v - Alaṃkāra (22): Tulyayogitā or equal pairing

When objects in hand or others are associated with one and the same attribute, the figure is Tulyayogitā[1] or equal pairing. An attribute is either a quality or an action. As for example, in the verse, divyendrajālātiśayayajñametaṃ[2] ……., it has been stated regarding the character of a wicked person that the dishonest person utters harsh words, which burns like fire. In a social gathering, that person, by his bitter words as if, draws out fire. The magicians can produce fire or create any strange item, by the power of his magic. But the wicked can be able to do this without any magical formulae, which means that their words are sufficient to make one ablazed, so he is to be observed well (and one should be alert and guarded so that he can not do any mischief). Herein, there is one attribute of burning which is associated with both the subject in hand and the subject not in hand. Hence, the verse under consideration stands as an illustration of the figure Tulyayogitā.
