This page relates “Alamkara (21): Vyatireka or contrast or dissimilitude” as it appears in the case study regarding the Srikanthacarita and the Mankhakosa. The Shrikanthacarita was composed by Mankhaka, sometimes during A.D. 1136-1142. The Mankhakosa or the Anekarthakosa is a kosa text of homonymous words, composed by the same author.

Part 5u - Alaṃkāra (21): Vyatireka or contrast or dissimilitude

When the upameya excels or falls short of the upamāna or the viceversa, it is Vyatireka[1] or contrast. The word Vyatireka means difference or excellence. As for example, in the verse, preṅkholannakhaghoraṃhukṛti[2] …….., the poet salutes the face of Pārvatī, that goddess who is sitting on the back of a roaring lion, having tremulous nails. Herein this verse, it has been implied that the face of Pārvatī is superior to the moon, which makes it an example of the figure Vyatireka. Some other examples of this figure are- sarvaiḥ kaiścana[3] ……, viyogibhiḥ procchvasadaṭṭahāsa[4] ……
