The backdrop of the Srikanthacarita and the Mankhakosa

The Shrikanthacarita was composed by Mankhaka, sometimes during A.D. 1136-1142. The Mankhakosa or the Anekarthakosa is a kosa text of homonymous words, composed by the same author.

Part 5t - Alaṃkāra (20): Pariṇāma or commutation

When what is superimposed serves the purpose in hand as being identified with the subject of superimposition, it is Pariṇāma or commutation, which is two-fold as being appositional or nonappositional.[1] In the verse, sarvāṅgasaṃvāhanakṛtyabhṛtyaḥ[2] ……., it has been stated that the lotus, the servant gets the wage of similarity with the face of a woman from Brahmā. The lotus is said to be the source as well as the place for sitting of Brahmā. As a servant gets salary from his master, the lotus also gets his wage of similar countenance as a boon from his master. Herein, there is the superimposition and identification of the upamāna with the upameya and the verse under discussion stands as an illustration of Pariṇāma. There is another instance of Pariṇāma, found in the Śrīkaṇṭhacarita- labdhvā vidho kāntabhujopadhānaṃ[3] …….
