The Shrikanthacarita was composed by Mankhaka, sometimes during A.D. 1136-1142. The Mankhakosa or the Anekarthakosa is a kosa text of homonymous words, composed by the same author.

Part 5i - Alaṃkāra (9): Paryāyokta or periphrasis

Paryāyokta or periphrasis occurs when the fact to be intimated is expressed by a turn of speech.[1] In other words, when what is to be conveyed is expressed, there is Paryāyokta. As for example, in the verse, vidherupādhyāyadhurāmasādhu[2] ……., it has been stated that the dishonest person put such words on the forehead of a good person, which the creator, even had not written on the good man’s fate. This means, wicked people impose awkward blames on the honest person. Herein the verse, the cause is expressed through the effect. The reason is that the description should be especially charming. Hence, the example stands as an illustration of the figure Paryāyokta. Some of other examples of this figure, found in the Śrīkaṇṭhacarita are—arālayadbhrūkuṭikṛṣṇapannagī[3] ……., yadaṃśusrotasaḥ saṅgād[4] ……, nīrandhrabāṣpalaharī[5] ……, also VIII. 30; XI. 50; XVII. 64, 65.
