This page relates ‘Purification and other Rituals Realting to the Rosary of Aksha-beads’ of the study on the Shaiva Upanishads in English, comparing them with other texts dealing with the Shiva cult (besides the Agamas and Puranas). The Upaniṣads are ancient philosophical and theological treatises. Out of the 108 Upanishads mentioned in the Muktikopanishad, 15 are classified as Saiva-Upanisads.

16. Purification and other Rituals Realting to the Rosary of Akṣa-beads

[...] Akṣamālikā Upaniṣad verse 4

Subsequently (after intertwining the garland) it should be made sanctified by immersing in the milk of Nandā etc,. Five species of cows and by rubbing duly with Pañcagavya (cow urine, cow dung, milk curd and ghee) and further by cleaning with Pañcagavya (curd of Nandā etc. Five species of cows). Then, the garland should be soaked into the perfumed water and “Om” should be recited. The leaves then should fold and made a funnel like and water should be sprinkled on it. The eight kind of scented items (Aṣṭagandha) i.e Takkola, Usira, Camphor etc should be smeared on it and then enshrined on the Metal “Manisila”. It should be worshipped with Akṣata (rice) and flowers. Every bead of the garland should be spelled systematically from the letter “a” to kṣa.[1] Lastly, “Salutation is conveyed to the subordinate or dependent powers of the death (Mṛtya). Please, be graceful on us with the Prayer and endow with pleasure to their devotees through this akṣamālikā.
