Training of performers

Puppetry has a unique technique of presentation.Therefore it seems necessary to take proper training under skilled puppeteer for a performer. It is an art form which traditionally handed from Guru to shishyo and fathers to son. Generally, after death or retirement of Oja or main puppeteer, the most skilled puppeteer of the group becomes Oja. In case of the presence of Oja’s skilled and interested son, the responsibilities of the troupe goes to him.Oja trains other members of the troupe. Now a days,different training institutions are established to give training to interested people. In Assam,most of the present puppet troupes are engaged in producing new puppeteers. According to puppeteer Narayan Deka, training is very much essential for becoming a skilled puppeteer.[1]

Since folk performers generally belong to the same family and therefore to promote the folk performance training to outsider is very important. Otherwise,it may revages with the time.

However,puppetry now become modern art with its implications of modern techniques.There are different internationally acclaimed puppetry training institutes are established in India. Some of the universities have also strated on the art of puppetry.Mumbai university is the first university of India which offers course on the art of puppetry.
