Qualities of puppeteer

Puppetry is the beautiful art form, which is the combination of literature, sculpture, painting, music, dance and drama.Any person without having deep interest and love for puppetry cannot become a puppeteer. Puppeteer Narayan Deka revealed that puppeteers are good actors, artist,good tailors,good musician and also a good reader.Puppeteers have deep knowledge about the characters.For gathering knowledge about the background of the characters, puppeteers must study the characters.The major part of the responsibility of success of the show bestow upon the puppeteers.His fingers are the valuable asset for him. Puppeteers know the proper use of background music. Puppeteer are good director. Stage of puppet shows are different from human shows. Puppeteers manipulates puppets from behind the screen,therefore puppeteer learns the unique techniques of of puppet stage from the skilled puppeteer of the group.Lighting creats a magical environment in the stage.Proper light can create required effect on stage.As a director, puppeteers have to acquire the knowledge operating light in drama.

Puppeteer should be a good tailor.A heavy amount of costumes with designes suitable to theme of the play needs in a puppet toupe. To fulfill the demand, puppeteers even know how to stitch cloth. To run a puppet troupe,the puppeteer needs capital as well as administrative capacity. As now a days puppet shows are used for earning money, therefore most of the puppeteer employs his troupe members against a fix remuneration.As a result,competition among puppet troupes is very high. Puppeteer must have quality of adjusting in any situation, and he must extrovert to sum extant.According to puppeteer Narayan Deka, to being a puppeteer is not an easy task. Sometimes I work for whole day,but I enjoy it so much that I never feel tired.

The puppeteer must be an all-rounder. From my observation of puppet shows of different puppet troupes I realize that the habit of study, research and observation of their surroundings is must needed quality of a puppeteer. Puppeteer should have manage capacity.They should be very patient so that they can handle any worst situation they faced during performance.Liberal mentality of a people is very much important to be a puppeteer.^[1]
