Colour used for painting of puppet of Satras

Colour has great importance in making of puppets. Different colours are used according to the role and position of puppets in play. Blue colour is used for colouring of the puppet of Rama, Krishna and Bishnu, while white colur is use for the puppet of Shiva and black or red colour is use for colouring of demon puppets.

Initially puppet troupes of Sattras used haital (the yellow orpiment) and hangul (cinnabar) for colouring their puppets. Using of traditional colour made from natural things was one of the features of puppets made in Satras. They made black colour from the ash of dry gourd, red colour from the leaves of kendu tree, pink colour fro the ripe betel nut, guava, turmeric etc.Chemical dyes are also used in making of modern puppets.
