This page relates ‘Counter Arrays’ of the study on the Nitiprakasika by Vaisampayana which deals primarily with with Dhanurveda, i.e., the science of war, weapons and military strategies of ancient Indian society. It further contains details on Niti-shastra, i.e., the science of politics and state administration but most verses of the Nitiprakashika deal with the classification and description of different varieties of weapons, based on the four groups of Mukta, Amukta, Muktamukta and Mantramukta.

Counter Arrays

A list of arrays that effectively counter specific arrays are also given in these texts. For instance, Kauṭilya states that the counter-formation for Dṛoṇa is Asahya type of vyūha; Dṛdhaka counters Pradara; Asahya counters Dṛdhaka; Cāpa counters Śyena vyūha; Suprathiṣṭha counters Prathiṣṭha; Vijaya counters Sañjaya, Viśālavijaya counters Sthūṇakarṇa, Sarvatobhadra counters Pāripatantaka and that Durjaya counters any type of vyūha.

Agnipurāṇa also states that Dṛdhaka counters Pradara and adds that Khātaka counters Asahya.
