PassageREFERENCE Manu Smriti XI-203. anena samucciyante | srautakarmatikrame yaistyauktasta anena Translation cmedhatithi on mms XI -203) In connection with the omission of the Srauta rites, some sacrifices have been prescribed by way of expiation; and with these the fasting here prescribed is to be combined. Explanation - 1 While stating penances we get Manu Smriti XI-203 which describes "Fasting is the penance for omitting the daily rites prescribed by the Veda and for neglecting the special duties of Snataka." Medhatithi in his comments on this verse says that, a person who omits daily rites and duties of house-holder, for him, some expiations d are prescribed. Daily rites are of two-fold. They are Sruta and Smarta. If a person omits these rites some sacrifice like Darsapurna Masa etc., are prescribed and these sacrifices are prescribed by way of expiations. These expiations are to be combined with the expiation of fasting. Thus all to Medhatithi the Manu Smriti XI-103 is a case of 'Samuccaya' of other for expiations and fasting for a Snataka neglecting his daily rites. (Other commentators of Manu are silent on this point). 1. | vedoditanam nityanam karmanam samatikrame | snataka vratalope ca prayascittamabhojanam " 11 . 2035 ins P-1446 handlike edition
