REFERENCE Manu Smriti XT-193. 986 Passage- yasya varnasya dvijateh sudrasya va dhanarjanopaya tatha yatpratisiddham tattasya garhitam yatha brahmanah ksatriyo vapi vrddhi naiva prayojayedityadi tenaye'rjayanti dhanam karmana tasyotsargajapatapamsi trini samuccitani prayascittani brahmanasyasatpratigraha uttaro visesavidhih | (Medhatithi mn ms XI-193) Translation Any means of acquiring property that has been forbidden for a man he be a twice-born or Sudra- is objectionable' for him e.g. it has been declared that 'The Brahmana or the Ksatriya shall not take interest' (10.117). For one who earns wealth by such means the expbation consists of giving up, 'repeating of texts' and 'austerities' all three combined. In the case of the Brahmana accepting an improper gift however there is a special expiation as described in the following verse. Explanation - 1 While discussing subject of minor offences Manu Smriti XI-193 states that - "If Brahmanas acquire property by the reprehensible means, they become pure by relinquishing it muttering prayers, and (performing) austerities. 1. yagdarhi tenarjayanti karmana brahmana dhanam | tasyotsargena sudhyanti japyena tapasaiva ca | 13 . 1935 Ms P-1441 Mandlik edition
987 Now, the question arises whether for a Brahmana earning money by ensured means there should be a combination of three expiations in the form of giving away the wealth, performing austerities and ma muttering the secret text or an option in respect of all these things. Medhatithi decides this question by stating that, this should be treated combination of all the things mentioned here and this is not to be treated as a case of option. In conclusion Manu Smriti XI-193 is a case of combination according to Medhatithi. (Other commentators of Manu simply pass over this point in silence).
