What means is that in the event of the Ksatriya's occupation being not available, he may have recourse either to the receiving of gifts from wrong persons or to the occupation of the Vaisya - both these standing in the same footing; the occupation of the Ksatriya, however would be superior to the receiving of improper gifts. Or, 'Does not adopt' the occupation of the Vaisa may also mean - 'the occupation of the Vaisya being not available to him'. In this case the receiving of improper gifts would be inferior to the occupation of the Vaisya. Resolved to stick to his own path, this indicates that this sums up all the occupations permitted during times of distress. 'Distressed through want of lively-hood and pining fallen in ruin. • i.e.

Explanation 1 383 983 While discussing occupations of castes, Manu Smriti X-101 states - "A Brahmana who is distressed through a want of means of subsistance and pines (with hunger), (but) unwilling to adopt a Vaisya mode of life and resolved to follow his own (prescribed path) may act in the following manner. Medhatithi/while commenting on this verse, says that last three words in the first line of the stanza i.e. Swapathi stitaha' indicate or stress that one may adopt all occupations that are permitted at the time of distress and also when a Brahmana cannot earn lively-hood by a Ksatriya's and Vaisyas's occupation. Thus a combination of all the occupations are intended. Otherwise a doubt would have arisen whether a Brahmana not getting a job of Ksatriya or Vaisya should beg or do other occupations? To clear this doubt Medhatithi rightly used the Mimamsa technical term 'combination' and thereby suggested the combination of all the means of occupations, for earning his livelyhood. This combination has relevance only at the time of distress and is not to be followed on other occasions if a Brahmana is in a position to earn his lively-hood.
