In this study, the background and content of the Matsyapurana is outlined against the cultural history of ancient India in terms of religion, politics, geography and architectural aspects. It shows how the encyclopedic character causes the text to deal with almost all the aspects of human civilization.

The Purāṇas are the great source of literary elements. Though old narratives and ancient legends are the basis of the Purāṇas, yet they are not lacking in the literary aspects also. The use of meter, figure of speech, sentiment etc. increases the flavor of these narratives and makes them captivating and interesting too. In the present chapter an attempt is being made to present on the literary aspects of the Matsyapurāṇa as initial studies show that this Purāṇa too contains almost all the literary elements along with other related aspects. In the following heads only the essential literary elements as found in the Matsyapurāṇa are examined.
