This page relates ‘Review of literature’ of the English study on the Matsya-purana: a Sanskrit text preserving ancient Indian traditions and legends written in over 14,000 metrical verses. In this study, the background and content of the Matsyapurana is outlined against the cultural history of ancient India in terms of religion, politics, geography and architectural aspects. It shows how the encyclopedic character causes the text to deal with almost all the aspects of human civilization.

Part 7 - Review of literature

Review of literature is an important part of any research work. The possibility of repetition of study can be reduced by doing the literature review and with this new aspects can be selected for the research. Apart from this the literature review helps researcher to remove limitations of existing work and to extend the study to a new limit. Several researches have been conducted the analysis of the Matsyapurāṇa. The glimpses of available literatures and researches are given below.

V. R. Ramachandra Dikshitar in his The Matsya Purāṇa–A Study have highlighted some particular topics of the Matyapurāṇa. It is first published by University of Madras in the year of 1935. In its first chapter the flood legend is dealt with. It covers the legends of floods, origin of the Purāṇa, and also the theory of Incarnation etc. The date of the Matsyapurāṇa is discussed broadly in this study. It has given the accounts on the polity and architecture also.

V.S. Agrawala in his Matsya Purāṇa–A Study made an attempt to evaluate the contents of the Matsyapurāṇa. It is first published in 1963. In this study, the content of the Matsyapurāṇa is outlined. It can be said a general study of the Matsyapurāṇa as the author has picturised all the contents following the order of the composition of the Matsyapurāṇa.

S.G. Kantawala in his book Cultural History from the Matsyapurāṇa discussed the social structure, political structure, religion and philosophy etc. This book is first published in 1964, from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda.

S. K. Jaiswal in his work Polity and Administration in the Matsya Purāṇa have given descriptions on the political ideas.
