Kavyamimamsa of Rajasekhara (Study)

This page relates ‘Alamkara (2): Shlesha-Yamaka’ of the study on the Kavyamimamsa of Rajasekhara: a poetical encyclopedia from the 9th century dealing with the ancient Indian science of poetics and rhetoric (also know as alankara-shastra). The Kavya-mimamsa is written in eighteen chapters representing an educational framework for the poet (kavi) and instructs him in the science of applied poetics for the sake of making literature and poetry (kavya).

In the ancient Sanskrit Poetics, all the famous scholars of Bharata, Bhāmaha, Daṇḍin and Vāmaṇa etc. described about the Yamaka alaṃkāra. Rudraṭa also discusses Śleṣa-Yamaka with fifty-eight stanzas in his Kāvyālaṃkāra (of Rudraṭa) There he gives its eight divisions. But in the first time of history of Sanskrit Poetics Yāyāvarīya Rājaśekhara elaborately discusses the Śleṣa and Yamaka to the view of haraṇa (borrowing).

In the Śabda-haraṇa chapter of Kāvyamīmāṃsā, Rājaśekhara says about ancient Ācāryas view as:

tatraikapadaharaṇaṃ na doṣāya” iti ācāryā |

Means:

“The borrowing of one word cannot be called a fault.”

But Rājaśekhara does not agree with this concept and says his own views as:

anyatra dvayarthapadāt” iti yāyāvarīyaḥ |

Means:

“borrowing of word which has two meanings is certainly not a fault, without this borrowing is under fault.”
