Introduction—The Adbhutas are supernatural occurrences. Whenever there is the appearance of these supernatural things, there is bound to be danger and destruction. Hence expiatory rites are to be carried out to ward off the evil effects of such ominous occurrences. The thirteenth adhyaya of the Kausika deals with as many as fortythree adbhutas followed by rites for removal of their ill-effects. As many as forty three kandikas, more than a fourth of this Grhyasutra describe these adbhutas and their parihara. This chapter 2 is typical of the Kausika sutra and it reveals the supernatural beliefs prevalent among the people of those days. The first kandika of this thirteenth adhyaya makes a mention of the different adbhutas and the remaining kandikas give details about these adbhutas and their pariharas. After a short note on the 'Days for Expiatory rites', 'The Trouble-Shooters' at these occurrences and 'The Expiatory rite Proper', the adbhutas and their pariharas are detailed in this chapter.

355 The Days for Expiatory Rites The expiatory rites in case of adbhutas should be performed either on the Full-moon day, New-moon day or an 'Auspiciousstarred' day. In times of emergency the rites can be performed at any time. The Trouble-Shooters Those well-versed in the Atharvangirasa alone are capable of protecting the people from these supernatural occurrences. Hence the king should summon them for removing the ill-effects of these super-natural occurrences. The Expiatory-rite Proper The expiatory rite in all cases is a simple recitation of some verses that will off set the ominous occurrences followed by an offering in the fire. Contents of the Thirteenth Chapter The different adbhutas and the expiatory rites connected with them are detailed according to the order of contents.
