Kalki Purana (cultural and historical study)
by P. N. Bhatt | 2000 | 35,421 words
Summary: This is an English study of the Kalki Purana—a minor Vaishnava Upapurana centred on Kalki which represents Vishnu’s tenth incarnation in Hindu mythology. The following chapters analyses Kalki’s life, exploits, teachings, chronology, and possible historicity, alongside political material compared with the Bhagavata Purana. It further investigates Kalki’s conflicts with Buddhists and Sasidhvaja and reassesses the fall of the Pradyotas. Internal and external evidence tentatively dates the composition to around the 13th century.
This cultural study of the Kalkipurana explores society, religion, philosophy, tribes, geography, architecture, warfare, dress, food, music, and dance. It discusses social practices including samskaras, marriage, sati, polygamy, sacrifices, and vows which are typically found in other Puranas as well.
