This page relates ‘Analysis of Kamala (Wife of Pandu)’ of the study on the Jivanandana (in English) which is a dramatic play written by Anadaraya Makhin in the 18th century. The Jivanandana praises the excellence of Advaita Vedanta, Ayurveda (medical science) and Dramatic literature as the triple agency for obtaining everlasting bliss.

Analysis of Kāmala (Wife of Pāṇḍu)

The dramatist very cleverly depicts this character Kāmalā only through the dialogues of her personal attendants, in the interlude of second Act.

Chardi, maid of Kāmalā reports, that Kāmalā in accordance with her role as minster Pāṇḍu’s wife, has sent the five Svāsas, friends of Kāsa to help him; she has also planned to fetch the wives of Svāsas to her palace (II.7):

āsyātyahitakarmaṇo vyapagame kāsena bhartrā samaṃ saṃdhāsye bhavatīṃ tu tatpriyasakhān saṃpreṣayantī rahaḥ |
itthaṃ śvāsavilāsinīrupagatāḥ paṣcāpi hikkāmukhīkṛtya drāgupasāntvya pāṇḍudayitā māṃ prāhiṇot kāmalā ||

Thus the play-wright depicts the character of Kāmalā as a very understanding and able wife of Pāṇḍu (avoiding her direct participation).
